Baby Corn Snakes

Corn Snakes Resources

If you’re considering corn snakes to keep as pets it would be a good idea not to go out and try to catch your own in the closes corn field. Rather than that, it would be recommendable to find a local breeder or a pet store that specializes in reptiles, big chain pet stores should be avoided. There are also quite a couple of reptile shows in many cities where you’ll be able to talk to experienced breeders who will be in a position to help you out with the necessary gear as well as advice on how to care for corn snakes.

It is true that corn snakes are considerably lower maintenance pets than a cat or a dog would be, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need a certain amount of attention each week. Plus this is only true after you’ve finished creating and properly balancing the various factors of their habitat, such as general environment and temperature.

However, before you start getting an aquarium and gathering pebbles and wood chips and branches, you need to make sure that you’ll be able to feed your corn snake, also need to make sure that you’ll be willing to feed it since they feed on mice. So in case you’re squeamish about that fact, you’d better reconsider having a corn snake as a pet.

On the other hand, if you’re not having second thoughts about that part of having a corn snake as a pet, make sure that you have a stable source of preferably frozen mice, so that your pet never goes hungry. Again you can find these at specialist pet stores and on the Internet.

When they’re babies, corn snakes will need to eat a baby mouse every three to five days, and as they grow they’ll need to eat bigger mice but at greater intervals. The rule of thumb when it comes to feeding them is to offer them mice that are the size of their mid-section or only a bit larger; anything smaller than that will leave them hungry and anything much larger may cause them to regurgitate.

In captivity, and if they’re happy, corn snakes can live up to and even above twenty years, however their length as adults will stop at about a meter and a half possibly two, but that’s a maximum. So, before you choose a corn snake as your pet, make sure that you have all the necessary preparations in place to ensure that it is happy.
